Whatever problems my harddisk has did not have ANY impact on browsing files in 18.04. As I reported initially, the problem started ONLY and IMMEDIATELY after the initial 20.04 upgrade. I therefore looked at the immediate PRECIPITATING CAUSE of the problem, version upgrade, before assuming it is a hardware problem. Anyway, thanks again for your time.
