Public bug reported:

The O/S was installed on a solid state disk drive, as the config info
you got probably suggests. That drive has been in use for ~4 years.
Please advise on how I should proceed.

Title:
The Software Updater does not find the directory /usr/share/appdata,
so is unable to successfully install new software. The directory
appears to exist and has a few files within it, presumably the items
  that are installed by default.
