I'm with Sergey on this, that is a feature we should have. Now, this is not my expert area, but, doesn't gaim support dynamic protocol/plugins? would it be possible/plausable to have the boujour/ichat/howl/mdns/avahi protocol/support as a seperate package? like gaim-ichat or whatever? i'm not a packaging expert, but, wouldn't this involve adding the howl- compat build-dep and then splitting the resulting file(s) out into their own gaim-whatever package, which then could be in universe/multiverse/wherever, and not on a default install? that package could depend on whatever non *-dev package it need to run (avahi-howl- compat or something similar i assume). this way, this old compat layer isn't in main, and the ichat support isn't so much default (much like the rhythmbox daap support, which is on, but needs avahi-daemon to be installed and switched on). this would at least make is possible to have this functionality, albeit not default, instead of require a complete rebuild of gaim by users who want this.
