the problem is gone for me. Now I'm using Linux ubuntu 2.6.22-14-386 #1 Sun Oct 14 22:36:54 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux and I still don't have any problem. Should this bug report be closed? Or the "fix" in the newer kernels was actually a side-effect of unrelated changes? In this case I fear the bug could reappear in future!
