Xfce and Mate are great Desktops also on ubuntu. If i had the money i would support both desktops with donations.
As long as xubuntu and ubuntu-mate exists , Canoncial is still producing usable fast and stable wonderful gtk based Systems. Just to mention the positive side of things. The focus of the main ubuntu desktop is far away from the traditional menubar design. Advanced functions are hidden or are entirely removed.
