Some more info: I can burn to a CD-R only if I haven't tried burning a CD-RW already. If I've tried a CD-RW, the same thing happens when I try a CD-R until I reboot (or probably just restart gdm, I'll get back to you on that).
The Device Manager shows the drive as CDRW/DVD TSL462D and that is uses SCSI for the bus.
