I had a similar problem on an older (2001 purchase) Sony Vaio PCG-SRX77 (intel810, P3, 800MHz, 256MB RAM). Eventually I got 7.10 running ... using the LOOOONG route. See "http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3882522";.
