"I tried the suggested 5.6.0-1008-oem kernel" I built latest stable vanilla kernel 5.7.6 using 5.4.0-39-generic's .config with "make oldconfig" and using defaults for all the new options. And that kernel worked without the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" parameter.
