Well, I've wondered if it was the nVidia driver, but shouldn't the problem persist after turning off compiz? The nvidia-glx-new driver works perfectly as long as compiz is turned off, and I also had the same problems on Feisty; bug 145112 says that the driver problem didn't exist in Feisty.
