uname -rs keeps returning the Linux 5.4.0-28-generic despite having
upgraded the kernel to either of the solutions you mentioned.. it says
it has upgraded successfully then after the reboot returns the same
variant.

This is the sort of problem I would have expected from a beta release
and most certainly not a LTS

I know this is done with volunteers but as a basic user I should not
have to be replacing kernels ... I'm still not sure why I am trying to
replace a kernel when the Gnome variant is still not updating .. are
they the one and the same? if they are why are they on different
variants? if they aren't then what I am doing tinkering with the kernel?

there is no clear place that outlines the relationships between the
various components .. its just assumed knowledge!
