Stuart, I counted about 80 app icons at Gnome desktop in my Ubuntu. This is not fresh install. But only 1 icon with grey background and this is Files. So it looks absolutely out-of-place. Maybe it could be a good idea if all icons had the same squircle style. But now all other icons have different style. So please, remove this squircle if you can.
