The results are:

Same thing in a failsafe window (from the login) as within a regular
terminal during regular boot, prior to xrandr.

After xrandr, the output is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xrandr --output LVDS --off
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xdpyinfo -ext XINERAMA|grep head
  head #0: 1440x900 @ 0,0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$
