Changing my smb.conf to include RCVBUF/SNDBUF values fixed my issue. I
don't know if the recommended value, my value, or another value is best
- but leaving them unset breaks most smb access for me.

# You may want to add the following on a Linux system:
#         SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=4096 SO_SNDBUF=4096
