Alrighty, so, I installed Xubuntu 16.04. `uname -or` outputs:
4.4.0-21-generic GNU/Linux
and `pulseaudio --version` outputs:
pulseaudio 8.0
In AlsaMixer, "Auto-Mute Mode" is set to "Enabled", and the audio
works perfectly exactly as expected.

This is definitely something that started happening in the 19.04
versions.
