For reference, recovered the installation with:
cd <1st partition, FAT>
for FILE in *.bak ;do mv -i ${FILE%%.bak} ${FILE%%.bak}.broken; mv -i ${FILE}
${FILE%%.bak}; done
So yeah, kernel 5.4.0.1004.4 is unbootable.
