Same problem with my ATI FireGL v5200 which needs fglrx.
I try to install linux-restricted-modules and it's not better. I have also
install fglrx with synaptics and reconfigure xserver-xorg but X didn't load.
R-M works for my wifi driver.
My Hardy is from scratch and up-to-date.
