This seems similar to a problem I've been experiencing. Sony Vaio, FJ1Z, Intel 915 with intel xserver. If it is the same bug, to reproduce it, select some text and click-drag the selected text.
When X freezes, the machine is still accessible via ssh and top shows no processes pegged.
