I have this problem too, and I am running Gutsy. Startup is ok (the usual slowness -- I don't use quickstart), and while typing alone seems OK, general tabbing and menu operation is so slow that I can actually watch the buttons on the toolbars refresh one by one when tabbing between applications. This does not happen for any other apps such as (firefox, gnumeric, gnome-terminal, or nautlius). I have a gig of RAM on an IBM T-43 (Pentium M) and the system is not swapping.
