For me the whole problem appears to be an IRQ problem because I noticed that:
- disabling the other network card helped - using the graphics card & network at the same time made it worse: i.e: play video in firefox - Windows XP Home has strikingly similar symptoms I can't remember I ever had a problem since I switched from Ubuntu Studio Feisty i386 to Ubuntu Studio Gutsy x86_64 so maybe it is now solved.
