I purged .*pulse.* and reinstalled pulse via aptitude. All is well now. I did notice that PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START in /etc/default/pulse is now disabled. My problems may have partially been due to that being enabled, since pulse seemed to start up fine in user mode.
