I then installed grub manually:

ubuntu@ubuntu:/$ sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p3 /mnt
ubuntu@ubuntu:/$ sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
ubuntu@ubuntu:/$ sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
ubuntu@ubuntu:/$ sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
ubuntu@ubuntu:/$ sudo chroot /mnt
root@ubuntu:/# sudo update-grub
sudo: unable to resolve host ubuntu: Temporary failure in name resolution
Sourcing file `/etc/default/grub'
Sourcing file `/etc/default/grub.d/init-select.cfg'
Generating grub configuration file ...

several minutes went before the line "grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB 
drive for /dev/sdb1.  Check your device.map." appeared and the command 
finished. /dev/sdb1 is the usb stick with the installer.
