I have upgraded to gutsy from dapper, and this is no longer an issue for xearth for the simple reason that there is no longer an xearth package. The xplanet package appears to have the same problem, but it is possible to work around it (for my purposes anyway) by copying the output to an image file and displaying that file. So I believe that the bug is still present (you can see this by simply running xplanet both with and without the -vroot option: neither of them displays the image in the root Kubuntu window).
