I had previously installed Gimp-Gutenprint as the driver for the printer, via the control panel, and in fact going via Gimp File Print gets a print, with the Gutenprint options in the "ordinary" print dialogue. I'm not sure it is quite so good though, so far, and I don't have the icc profile stuff.
