I experience this sort of behaviour on a regular basis using the open source ati/radeon driver, on an Acer aspire 5500 with an ATI X700 Mobility GPU (64MB video RAM).
The problem is *far more frequent* with compiz (or beryl) enabled, however it has happened once or twice with all compositing window managers disabled (but not DRI in the xorg config). Disabling DRI in the xorg config eliminates the problem (but also disables all 3D).
