The only reason I cannot recommend Inkscape as a replacement for Adobe
Illustrator for scientific figures and posters is this bug, now 4 years
old. Even the solution of locking the offending objects on different
layers does not work all the time. With many objects, Inkscape (0.92.4
on Ubuntu 18.04), is unable to perform the move to a new layer.

I searched for alternatives to Inkscape and none of the ones that are
open source is able to import correctly the svg files generated from R.

The only solution I currently have is to raterize part of the plots and
use the uneditable bitmaps in Inkscape.
