Manually removing 'system-moni...@paradoxxx.zero.gmail.com' folder found in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ remedied the problem. In other words, uninstalling the extension manually and rebooting lowered gnome-shell cpu usage down to less than 5% on idle. Thanks
