That's true, I made a patch for the latest version (1.9.7) that supports UTF-8 
(I posted it on lds-devel too).
Enclosed is an adaptation for the current Gutsy version. You can test it if you 
are brave enough :-)

cd /usr/bin
sudo patch -p0 < [path]/lyricue-1.9.4.diff

If something goes wrong, you can always reinstall (sudo apt-get
--reinstall install lyricue).
