Public bug reported: I'm beginning to notice a disturbing trend in what people call me out on with the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. I can understand when I'm flaming something or otherwise being not nice (it happens); but there are certain cases where I feel something is just WRONG with what's being enforced.
A recent exchange on the SecureHome Wiki really brought this into my mind, reproduced below. * You only mention GNOME. What about KDE and Kubuntu? ** I don't use KDE and thus neither know nor care what the file selector looks like; this is not a difficult problem, I'm sure you can find someone who both cares and can implement it. Drop a symlink in ~/Desktop/ if all else fails. --JohnMoser *** Whoa there, be nicer towards others' feelings. Would you like it if I say, that I don't use GNOME and thus don't care what GNOME looks like, and that in fact I dislike GNOME? No. So I should not say so, and you should not, either. It's against the Ubuntu code of conduct. -- Jamadagni I've reread my statements repeatedly, and cannot find anything qualifying as a personal attack on anyone. The most I can find is unnecessary but not necessarily wrong statement of my own opinions on KDE ("...nor care..."). It appears to me that I'm thus being called out for having an opinion that's incompatible with someone else's opinion. To me this seems to be a major problem. I live in a country where we're fast approaching a point where if you disagree with someone else's opinions in even the most minor way, you better not say so or they might "suffer mental duress" and sue you for "damages." This is strangely reminiscent of Pleasantville, especially towards the end where everything was suddenly NOT pleasant and the mayor tried to enforce strict rules about everyone acting in a "pleasant and courteous manner." Differences of opinion will not be tolerated, regardless of whether there's a personal attack involved or simply a misalignment of views? No, something's wrong with this. If you can't handle people not having the EXACT same set of opinions and values as you, you need to go live in a box for the rest of your life because you're DEFINITELY not going to survive in the real world. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Code of Conduct used as a crutch https://launchpad.net/bugs/62178 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
