One option worth investigating, as pointed by Mike, is whether we could now switch to evdev from the xserver-xorg-input-evdev package (based on the upstream xf86-input-evdev module). hardy has version 1:1.2.0~git20070819-4 and gutsy had 1:1.1.5-3; the module seems to have seen major update for the xserver input-hotplug rewrite.
