I tried the install disc in live user mode. I did not want to overwrite all my files, so I didn't do a fresh install. I don't know if the live user mode not working with sound tells you anything. HDMI doesn't work either. I saw it earlier, but it has disappeared. Also, when I uninstalled and purged alsa according to one of the online suggestions, and reinstalled it, alsamixer no longer loads, saying "no such file or directory", and if I load it with -c 1, it says invalid card.
