okay did something unusual .. i copyed my apt sources and trust files from the 
working version sda1
to the copy on sda6 the added a series of new proposed updates including a new 
kernel version
on reboot the updated sda6 worked as expected:

this was the upgrade package list: including a few earlier xorg/video
driver upgrades from previous update for reference too!
