Using the ATI commercial driver that one gets through Ubuntu repos
cannot be used for Desktop Effects because when installed via the
Restricted Drivers Manager it states when trying to activate Desktop
Effects that "the composite extension is not available". So until now, I
had to use the free Radeon xorg driver (which locks my desktop up).

However, on a whim I tried using Envy to install the latest commercial
ATI driver. I did and I enabled desktop effects. There was no composite
extension complaint. All went as expected. YAY!!

I've been using desktop effects (incl animations plugin) with this
Envy installed commercial driver for my X300 for 2 days now with no
hangs.
