The patch on #39 solved the problem. However, after applying #40, and then #41 I was able to enable the touchpad. But disabling wasn't working consistently.
After reboot, the touchpad is working, and the enable/dissable feature now shows an overlay with the enable/disable status (like with brightness and sound effects). I'm not sure if that is relevant, but rebooting let the system operational.
