I seem to be having the same problem. My scanner is a 1212u too, but that does not seem to be the problem, because Kooka crashes both with the USB scanner plugged and unplugged. scanimage, xscanimage also crash with a segmentation fault.
It had always worked fine. My last scan was maybe 2 months ago, so I can't really tell on which update it actually stopped working. I regularly apply package updates as suggested by the daily update notifier.
