i gave the xfce another try last night and it worked fine for me (means it did not freeze or anything), although i worked with some programs during that time (firefox, eclipse, mplayer, etc). i did not turn on desktop effects in xfce since i actually don't know how to do that and i didn't have the time to read about it.
