+1 here. Using updated Edgy Knot 3. I too can run it with --sync.

$ pitivi
The program 'pitivi' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.

  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;

When running pitivi --sync, I get the error
