Thank you for your bug report, indeed that's suboptimal but that's the
way the filesystem is working and not specific to nautilus. Having to
get that info in the UI would require to browse all the dir content
which would be very slow. Closing as wontfix but feel free to report it
upstream on https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues if you want
to discuss improvements/ideas with them
