Both issues were addressed in Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna. There is a new tool
for automatic updates called mintUpdate and in Daryna mintInstall was
made more user-friendly and now comes with a search engine.

Daryna stable should be out this week.

If you want to stay with Celena, the way you use mintInstall is simply
by browsing the software portal http://www.linuxmint.com/software, then
from there you get a .mint file and by clicking on it it will launch
mintInstall.
