Thanks Martin for testing my patch, I'm glad it fixed the problem for you. With regards to the screen size issues you are facing, I'm 99.9% sure it's not caused by xfdesktop, but xfce4-settings. Have you tried reverting the patch or even disabling xfdesktop (xfdesktop -Q)? I'm confident the behavior will be the same.
