Ok, uninstalled thermald version 1.7 on Ubuntu 18.04 (kernel 4.4.0-21-generic) and installed version 1.5 from Ubuntu 16.04. Ran for several hours under various loads, some gaming included, all was fine. Closed the lid, the laptop went to sleep, opened after couple of hours -> laptop immediately went 100% RPM on fans.
