I have the same: IBM T21 version 7.10. Each time I select stand-by, log off, hibernate the screen goes black and that's it. I have to switch the computer of and on again. I am quite new to Ubuntu. Perhaps this might help for troubleshooting: Before I used Ubuntu I used the Knoppix live CD. Screen went blank when system booted. Workaround was to select fb 1024*768 I then installed Knoppix on the HDD, system started and shut down as per design
