To answer my own question: that update removed a blacklisting in blacklist.conf. The result of that removal, on my system, was that the touchpad stopped working after suspend, even when S3 was not enabled. A few hacks get the touchpad working again, but not properly - edge- scrolling, and I suspect some other functions, are lost.
