I appreciate the effort to help with upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 -- not real clear understanding how to install desktop package and how that would impact holding broken packages. In the 60 days that have elapsed since posting my problem, I've continued to install 16.04 updates when directed to do so. I'm wondering if the updates have corrected the problems identified hindering the upgrade to 18.04. It may be time to try again. However complicating efforts, I'm considering installing the 64-bit version of 18.04 in a separate new hard drive partition. I admit that I'm wary of fixing something that seems to be working for me just fine as is. My curiosity will likely overcome my reticence at some point.
