I think my current problem is related to long standing "nouveau" problems with nVidia graphic cards: my "syslog" contains many entries of the form "nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: bus: MMIO write of 00000000 FAULT at 00b020" (of "..." varies and at "..." can end in "b000", "b010" instead of "b020"). Trying to unblock the freeze with SysRq-k leads to the syslog entry (among others): " nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: Xwayland[1545]: failed to idle channel 5 [Xwayland[1545]]".
