I am facing this issue in Gutsy 7.10 When I enable the Ubuntu restricted driver for nVIDIA and reboot the screen becomes blank. The only way to recover is to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and set the driver back to default - nv.
The hardware on the Toshiba TE2100 is NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go] I have even tried using the Envy package to install the nVIDIA drivers but same issue.
