The problem is somehow related to the video driver. The "plug-n-play" driver which was installed by Gutsy was an "Intel experimental modesetting driver".
I changed the Driver option in the "Device" section from "intel" to "i810", and that resolved this problem, as well as several others (such as Gamma and other options in xorg.conf being ignored).
