I have tried two things:

(1) Fresh install, Ubuntu 18.04 (about ten days ago), ext4. No errors
during the installation. However, when installing stuff via apt
afterwards (or upgrading), I got many errors along the lines described
above (e.g., "compressed data is corrupt... unexpected end of file or
stream"). This happened for, I guess, arbitrary packages. No errors for
initramfs update for me ...

(2) Fresh install, Ubuntu 18.04 (about four days ago), btrfs for /. No
errors at all.
