Public bug reported:

Installer crashed - yes. QA tracking, 18.10 xubuntu x86 daily image

I suspect (looking at dmesg, adding smartctl, but mainly journalctl)
that the cause of the crash was HDD errors on /dev/sdc5 where I was test
installing XUbuntu 18.10

see

iso.qatracker.ubuntu.com/qatracker/miltestones/390/builds/181669/testcases/1302

(then manual partitioning; sorry if I made a typo, typed from screen
1.6m right & slightly behind me...)

I'll do more testing of hdd before I try again.
