Sorry about the late reply. The projector is a rather old Compaq projector, but I also have trouble with another ancient Apple Studio display. After much experimentation, I did manage to get them all to connect when I issue these commands in this specific order
xrandr --output VGA --auto xrandr -s 1024x768 xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1024x768 That solves my specific problem, but I still think this needs to be made far more user-friendly No, Fn+F7 (the monitor switching key on Thinkpads) doesn't work, but it has never worked for me on Linux.
