@27: pulse has a ton more features than dmix, which is why most distros use it
If all of your apps are using pulseaudio then they shouldn't conflict with each other. This suggests there is a rogue app running pasuspender or somesuch (for example, the Mixxx desktop icon uses pasuspender by default, so this will conflict with everything.
